An invitation to DEATH!

May,2001

“Here you are John, and we were looking out for you everywhere”, said Harry.

A puff was the response.

“It’s fifteen minutes past five only, even Sun hasn’t come out completely, and this probably is your third one”, I said looking at his ash-tray.

Two more puffs came out in response.

In addition to that, his walk out of the terrace without any reply made my efforts seem useless, like always.

As we went down, we saw him getting comfortable in his bed, with the third roll lying down on the side of his bed.
Shall I feel sorry for him? Or for us? Or for his family?
It was his choice, but it had its effect over everybody, who are connected to him in some way or the other. I did my part as a friend. Every now and then I kept on asking him, suggesting him to get rid of it. But nothing seemed to be working.
We switched off the lights and went back to our rooms with a hope that this might was his last puff.

Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.
― Mark Twain

So I never said it’s easy to quit smoking.

May 2030

“I wish this wasn’t the place where we had to bid him adieu” sobbed John, while putting flowers over a grave. Gravestone reading ‘Harry Louis from 1980-2030’..

May 2015

“He needs to get rid of this addiction otherwise I am afraid soon you might loose one of your friends”, warned Dr. Paul.
“Have a look at these reports. His lungs are at the verge of giving up. Can you see this unhealthy colored area, it’s all the dead part of lungs. The condition of his lips, it has worsen from what I had feared.”

“These chains of puff will allure you. These cigarette’s swirls wafting over your head are knitting their cobweb around your mind. This will leave you entangled for the rest of your life. It is easier said than done, that I know. But just give it a try, at least. One last time. Please.
Look at me. It is not impossible”, John pleaded Harry.

How tragic!
It was John whose addiction was killing him. But didn’t realize when that addiction trapped Harry in its vice, and released John. Or I must say when John pulled himself out of it.

Today,  June 2030

Though John still gets tempted by those high rising puffs and thin yet dangerous rolls of whites being played between fingers by many, he still controls his lure. If he hadn’t had heard to our pleas to join a rehabilitation center and thought of his family’s future to get rid of smoking, then I might have lost him too.
Also, if Harry could have refused that cigarette at the first place offered by his senior, at his office party, I might have had both my friends by my side today.

P.S. – Let us face it. Not most, but all of us know how injurious is smoking to our health. Yet we don’t or say can’t quit it. Why?
NICTONE, a highly addictive substance (commonly in all tobaccos), makes its way to the inhaler’s brain and reduces his/her life-span in disguise of making him feel temporarily relaxed.

  • If it’s all stress that is eating you up, I insist you to talk to your friends or someone who you trust upon and share your problems, worries and anxieties. Don’t let them suffocate your within, or they might rule you over and get you snared in shackles of puffs.

I know it’s not easy to quit an addiction, but just think of your life. Is this addiction worth your life?

  • If it’s peer-pressure or other reasons which made you get indulged in this vicious trap then don’t hesitate to head towards rehabilitation center. There is nothing to be ashamed of. It takes guts and courage to do so and you should be proud of yourself to take such a huge step towards redeeming yourself.

The wretcheder one is, the more one smokes; and the more one smokes, the wretcheder one gets—a vicious circle.
― George du Maurier, Peter Ibbetson

If possible, DON’T, NOT FOR EVEN ONCE, PUFF ON A CIGARETTE.

If asked, it is one of the worst thing to get addicted to. Everybody knows what causes death and still they fool around with it only to become a one, in a hard way.

Great post and really an eye opener for all those of them who have just started smoking. The most difficult addiction started by peer pressure and many other reasons.

All readers come to fiction as willing accomplices to your lies. Such is the basic goodwill contract made the moment we pick up a work of fiction.
